Party People Have Visited 2004 PPC Picture Pages Since 1/2/2004

In the beginning....

My really good friend, Mr. Chris Festa (to left of me in the cowboy hat and sunglasses) got me started in all of this silliness on a frigid Super Bowl Sunday morning in January 28, 2001. I thought it was complete insanity to go out on a February morning and play kickball. But the scene of the crime, Jonquil Park (Wrightwood, Sheffield, and Lincoln) in Chicago's historic Lincoln Park neighborhood was just two blocks from home. I hadn't played a game since like third grade, but I guess it was when I heard about the Mad Dog 20/20 team meetings at second base that I decided to give it a try.

This is apparently part of a longstanding tradition by Mr. Festa's crew, dating back to the mid 1990's. For more details you can check out Festa's kickball page here.

Of course this was so much fun that I got together with some friends from my Tuesday night Marquette Rec-Plex volleyball team for our first ever Milwaukee kickball game on Tuesday, February 17, 2001 at the now popular MUSA venue, Pulaski Park. A few more pictures of true "old school" Pulaski Park Winter Kickball can be found here. The high water mark was Lunatic Bowl VI in 2003 where it must have been FOURTEEN DEGREES in the sun and my rum & cokes froze solid! Sadly, these "ice bowl" traditions appears to have gone into remission as we get older and less crazy. But those were fun times!

Today... the MUSA Era

Well, playing a casual pickup game every Super Bowl Sunday gave way to full blown league play with the first season of my buddy Liz's "Drinkers With a Kicking Problem" (DWKP) in the FALL of 2002 in MUSA's leagues in Milwaukee. DWKP started off and remains in the Wednesday night Wick/O'Brien's Division on Vliet in Washington Heights. Beer-soaked post-kickball Karaoke outings at O'Brien's on Vliet rival the fun of the the Friday night divisions. This team is mostly comprised of members of the Waukesha Hash House Harriers "A Drinking Club With a Running Problem".

Winter 2003 DWKP

This was MUSA's experiment in doing a Winter league at the Milwaukee Rampage Sports Complex (indoor soccer arena) in Franklin. Rubber covered concrete is a highly unforgiving surface (I made only one intentional dive all season) but between the wicked action when fly balls bounced around the HVAC in the ceiling and meeting Don's "Thumbs Up" crew (now Looking 2 Score) a great time was had by all. Some nights we had so much fun at this Thumbs Up place that we never even made it to Wick! Friday night kickball made for rough Saturday mornings though.

Spring 2003 Misfits and Will Kick For Beer

Riding on the success of the Fall 2002 inaugural season of Drinkers With a Kicking Problem, a DWKP-spinoff team was created to handle the additional demand, called "Will Kick For Beer" (WKFB). We put all our big guns in DWKP and while WKFB was basically cannon fodder at lovely Burbank Field, but money in the pitcher races, the only contest that really counts. Although WKFB only lasted a single season, elements of it are now part of the Spring 2004 team, Yankmees. This was also the first season joining my buddy Dan's team, The Misfits.

Summer 2003 "Repeating Gym Class" and Fall 2003 DWKP & The Misfits

As kickball continued to flourish in metro Milwaukee, Capn' Liz put together a hybrid team called "Repeating Gym Class" (RGC) which drew heavily from both DWKP and a Friday Pulaski Team, In Vino Veritas. While no match for power teams like Don's "Looking 2 Score" RGC was still nevertheless a very strong threat on the field. On the plus side, that KP Classics place they chose let you bring beer on the field. On the minus side, Big Bend is at least 45 minutes from anything remotely resembling civilization. The camera must have taken a break as I can't seem to find any pix of Repeating Gym Class but did snap my first ever pic's of the Misfits, under the first Ray Ray Administration.

As DWKP enters its fifth season we once again take O'Brien's by storm! Drunken Kickball Karaoke'rs HAVE NO SHAME!!!! Repeating Gym Class Becomes a Tieing Powerhouse as they Tie C-Fresh a record three times in one season in Summer Skool! And the Misfits become an Elite Eight Franchise at Spring EOS!!
