Important notice from the social chair
: As you may have noticed the
weekly emails from
chicagofourth@yahoo.com
are no longer weekly. In fact, they will be discontinued in their current
form entirely as of the end of January 2006 and will be replaced with
party update emails via our new Yahoo! Group -
fridgedoor_chicago. In order to
continue to receive our emails you must sign up at our new
Yahoo! group
website at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fridgedoor_chicago
We use a Yahoo! Group so all
members can manage their own subscriptions to our list (which leaves more
time for us to party!). The existing Fridge Door website itself (this
page!) will remain the as our bulletin board. Hope to continue to see you
out on the town! Party on,

Passion for Wines and a Heart
for Others
Summer is waning, football is around the corner, what
better way to spend our leisure time than to unwind with our friends and
a crateful of wine!
I would love to stop by your place for a few hours and
entertain, educate and refresh your friends with an eclectic wine tasting.
That is just the beginning. Along with a fun evening we can all walk away
knowing we have helped a homeless family find shelter. Why? Because with
each bottle of wine $1.50 is donated to sheltering homeless people with
children.
The host receives a discount on wine that is
proportional to how much wine the other guests select. That discount can be
applied to a wine selection or go directly towards helping the homeless, as a
tax-deductible charitable contribution.
So let's have some parties and work at providing shelter
one bottle at a time! Simply email or call me with your preferred dates and I
will work with you to provide an entertaining evening simply sipping wine.

Stock Up On Running Gear Now and Help Out Momentum and Help Them Out
Hi everyone,
I know many of you have attended Momentum's fun runs in the past, their pancake
runs on Saturday, or will be doing their St. Patty's day run tomorrow, but this
is a plea to help them out. They had a bad year last year as there was
significant construction in front of their building during their peak summer
selling months and they've had a slow winter, which is to be expected due to the
seasonality of their business. They are currently at a make-or-break point and I
would hate to see them go.
If you aren't familiar with the store, it's the former Vertel's store on
Clybourn, across from the Petco parking lot. It is a wonderful group of people
who work there and is pretty much family-owned and operated. I have always been
a proponent of helping the little guy out, and in this case, the little guy
really needs our help and ASAP. So, if any of you are considering buying new
shoes or running gear anytime soon, please consider Momentum and head over there
ASAP. They literally are to the point where the next few DAYS are critical for
them.

Room for Rent in Wicker Park
I am going to be renting
my guest room out. Wondering if you knew of anyone that might be interested or
could send this on. I'd like to have a referral than a stranger. Please feel
free to forward on.
The room will be
available after March 15th and can come furnished or not. I would not be opposed
to a temporary situation either. For anyone who hasn't seen my place, it's
the top floor of a Victorian. Big kitchen, super large bath w/ Jacuzzi tub and
walk in shower. Its on the park with a yard too! Just two blocks from the Blue
Line Damen stop.
Thanks for your help.

Ian Coburn's Sports League Board
I've started the Sports League Board. PLEASE USE IT.
If we all use it, it should take off soon. It is a great way to reach people
all over and across leagues to find players and hopefully get more teams back
into these leagues AND the Monday floor hockey going again. (I worked my ass
off to get 8 teams in that league for 2 or 3 seasons straight and hate to see
it dead now. Like to get it going again before they give the court to another
sport.) The board is linked to from my home site
www.iancoburn.com. There is a page
that explains how it works; please read it before using the board for the
first time. Using the board does not make your team accessible to anyone to
play; you can block people out by requesting a forum or simply by asking that
only people who know you or of a certain skill or rec level reply, etc.
I will be using this board from now on for my weekly
game time reminders starting Monday, so teams please check it. I welcome you
all to do so. I'll be posting all sub needs there. If you are looking to
sub, post there. This should work out great for all of us and I'm simply
taking the next step in keeping these leagues going, getting better, and
making it easier on all of us.
Check Out Our
Friend Marci's New Chocolate and Toffee
Hi Friends
I am excited to announce that I am "unofficially"
launching my candy making company (in other words, this is something I am
doing on the side while we finish up the launch of the nutritional supplement
company I am working on, Acelera Nutrition, LLC).
I have finally mastered my mother's famous chocolate and
nut toffee recipe and am making it available for sale. It makes a great thank
you, birthday, or hostess gift. It is also great to offer at your
own parties.
I am attaching a flyer that describes the product, shows
sample package ideas, and lists pricing. I can also get other custom
packaging, with some notice (for example, gift tins, larger boxes, baskets,
etc). For those of you who are reading this on your Blackberrys, I have also
included the pricing below. Please let me know if I can assist you in your
gifting or candy needs in any way.
If you have a group of people who might be interested in
this type of gift, I can do a group tasting and bring samples to show your
group. I brought some to my women's networking meeting last night and took
several orders at the meeting!
Thank you for your support

Check Out Our Friend Ian Coburn's New Book: God is a Woman: Dating Disasters by
Comedian Ian Coburn
Well, it is finally
coming out. For those who don't know, I wrote a book of funny dating stories
and dating advice, along w/some celebrity stories. It will be out in early
Sep. I do mention hockey, volleyball, the SOB's, and the last chapter is "The
Bonedigger". (How could I not use such a cool name?) What's the title? "God is
a Woman: Dating Disasters by Comedian Ian Coburn". All the info you need can
be found at www.godisawoman.net.
Check it out!
The first print run will
be ordered by the end of the week (around Aug. 11). I need to know how many to
order, so please help me out. Use the the "Yes" response to order a copy,
"number of guests" to tell me how many additional copies you want (gifts for
family, friends, taxi drivers...), and feel free to write a message or email me
at iancoburn@hotmail.com
if you want me to write a certain personal message along w/a signature. (I'll
sign all copies ordered here.) I'll bring your order to hockey, volleyball, the
beach, wherever or mail as needed. In Sep. there will be a book release party
somewhere and I can bring orders there, too. No need to use the "maybe" or "no"
options. The cost changes drasticallly depending on the number of books ordered
in a print; the more, the better.
Cost: $12.95-$15.95 per
book depending on length, probably $14.95. (Pay when I drop your book off, not
here.)
Length: 250-275 pages,
won't know until print run.
I basically started my
own publishing company--to release the book sooner, have more control, and to
make enough profits to donate $2 of each book sale to children who are victims
of Hurricane Katrina.
Just wanted to take a
moment and say thanks to anyone who's been talking up the book. Word-of-mouth
is starting to spread, esp. on Amazon and I've been kicking butt in sales over
the last two weeks, beating out a lot of big books. Today I reached #762 in
sales ranking, my best to date. It's all been via word-of-mouth, especially as
people (who I don't know) have been mentioning it as a great book on other
books' Amazon pages. If you have ever bought anything off Amazon and liked the
book, please feel free to write a review. The more, the better, and I have 16
right now, beating out most other books. (I've sold around 300 books in the
last week on Amazon.)
Also, due to time constraints and because I hate bugging people, for updates
please check out the website. Unless I get a big national show or press, I
won't be emailing again about the book. Radio appearances, articles, etc, will
all be posted ahead of time on the site, www.godisawoman.net.
Again, thanks everyone. It's going well.
Thanks everyone!

Contact Your Alderman to Support Say Adios To Blue Bags and Hello To True
Source-Separated Recycling
From
my friend and fellow recycling proponent, Shira. [Fuji editorial comment: I
don't usually put political stuff up on the board, but this issue hits home for
me. I think the Blue Bag program has not worked and I for one think that if it
costs a buck a week more for the city to do real recycling I'm all for it. They
can use 52 of the thousands of extra property tax dollars they collect from me
every year as the assessed valuations of Party Central have skyrocketed with the
rest of Lincoln Park!]
This
measure was recently supported by a majority of Chicago Alderman to move from
Blue Bags to true source-separated recycling (separate collection containers and
pickups). Contact your alderman if you support the way to truly get Chicago
recycling!
The story on this in the Trib
Below
is an ordinance to be voted on tomorrow morning, Wednesday 1/11 to improve
Chicago recycling. The ordinance cites numerous depressing statistics on the
current state of the Blue Bag program and proposes that recyclables be separated
at their source.
- Your
ward should be on your voter's registration card, or you can figure it out from
the map at
http://egov.cityofchicago.org/webportal/COCWebPortal/COC_EDITORIAL/Wards_overview_2.pdf
- Once
you know your ward you can find your alderman at
http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalProgramAction.do?programId=536879154&channelId=-536879035&topChannelName=Government
Text
of the proposed ordinance is below.
Order
Requiring the Department of Streets and Sanitation to Implement a City-Wide
Residential Source-Separated Recycling Program
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago, under the leadership of Mayor Richard M. Daley,
has implemented a number of path breaking environmental initiatives and
programs, such as the Brownfields Initiative, energy efficiency programs, the
Center for Green Technology, and the Green Building, Green Bungalow and Green
Roofs initiatives; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago's residential recycling programs stand as a blot on
the City's otherwise admirable environmental record; and
WHEREAS, recycling conserves natural resources such as trees, oil, and mined
metals; and products made with recycled materials consume less energy to
manufacture than those made of raw materials, resulting in fewer fossil fuels
being burned and less greenhouse gas created; and
WHEREAS, recycling creates jobs for the community, as industries are established
and expanded to accept, process, and remanufacture clean and separately
collected recycled materials; and
WHEREAS, the Illinois Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Act requires all
Illinois counties and the City of Chicago to implement recycling programs that
divert at least 25 percent of municipal waste to recycling; and
WHEREAS, recycling reduces the need for new landfills, which will be soon be in
demand in the Chicago Metropolitan Region, as per the latest (2003) report by
the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the region has only five years of
remaining landfill capacity; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation currently
operates a residential recycling program, termed the "blue bag program," which
collects and mixes together recyclable materials, yard trimmings, and garbage;
and
WHEREAS, the blue bag program has never successfully recovered more than 10 to
12 percent of the waste as usable, resalable commodities, that is, paper,
cardboard, metals, glass, and plastic; and.
WHEREAS, the city, instead of separately collecting and hauling yard trimmings,
mixes clean yard waste with the garbage, creating a contaminated substance it
calls "screened yard waste," which cannot be composted on farmland or used in
gardens; and
WHEREAS, the city currently allows 30 percent of the residential waste loads to
bypass the city's own sorting facilities and instead be hauled directly to waste
transfer stations, where little or none of the recyclable materials are
recovered; and.
WHEREAS, the overall recovery rate for the blue bag program - by mixing garbage
with recyclables, contaminating yard trimmings, and utilizing transfer stations
- is currently only 8 percent, which is the lowest recovery rate since the
program began in 1995; and
WHEREAS, the people of Chicago, understanding that the blue bag program does not
effectively recover their recycled materials, have been unwilling to embrace the
program, resulting in a participation rate of only 13 percent; and
WHEREAS, most major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minneapolis,
New York City, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle, have implemented citywide
source-separated recycling and composting programs for their residents, which
result in 20 to 50 percent recovery rates and 70 to 90 percent participation
rates; and
WHEREAS, after ten years, the recovery and participation rates for the blue bag
program are not only unacceptably low, but continue to decline; now, therefore,
BE IT HEREBY ORDERED that the City of Chicago Department of Streets and
Sanitation implement a citywide source-separated residential recycling program
that collects the full range of common household recyclable materials and yard
waste separately from residential garbage collection; and
BE IT
FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Streets and Sanitation and other relevant
City Departments implement regulations requiring private waste haulers to
implement similar source-separated recycling programs; and
BE IT
FURTHER ORDERED that these programs shall be fully implemented no later than
January 1, 2009.
Donate Extra Frequent Flyer Miles To Help Our Troops Come Home: Operation Hero
Miles
From my co-worker Bev. If you have some extra frequent flyer miles, or are
current or former road warrior like me and have frequent flyer accounts at every
major airline and have some miles lying around you'll probably never use at
airlines you hardly fly, this is a great use for them rather then forfeiting
them over time. More info available at
http://www.heromiles.org/
~~
In September 2003, the Pentagon started giving soldiers stationed in Iraq
two-week leaves in the largest R & R program since the Vietnam War. Soldiers on
R & R or Emergency Leave are flown by the military to Germany or three airports
in the United States, Baltimore/Washington, (BWI), Dallas/FortWorth, (DFW), or
Atlanta, (ATL ) for free.
The soldiers have been responsible for flights the rest of the way in the U.S.
to their destinations, until Congress provided funding for this purpose on
November 3, 2003. However, this funding is not yet available and may not be
sufficient for all the troops or troops on "Emergency Leave".
More than 470 soldiers a day are arriving in the U.S.
Many soldiers on R&R leave must purchase high-priced last minute airfares to
connect to their hometowns once their military flights land at the airports in
Baltimore, Dallas or Atlanta. Soldiers on "Emergency Leave" must still pay the
full cost of their domestic travel when they are rushed home for the family
death, birth, illness or other emergency. The military does not pay the cost of
their travel in the United States, so your frequent flyer miles are a huge help.
Americans have donated their unused frequent flyer miles to the Department of
Defense to help troops travel home and spend quality time with their loved ones,
without worrying about how much it will cost.
The lowdown on the PPC Fridge
Door...
Okay folks, we get lots of requests to post
various things such as notice of upcoming parties and other events, as well as
people who are looking to buy/sell/rent stuff like condos, cars, etc. Rather
than put them all on a large spam email, we've decided to conserve electrons for
use in more important stuff (saving up for the bar tab) and keep all this good
stuff on this page, kind of like how you post notices and other stuff on your
fridge door at home.
The top portion contains a detailed index of
all the stuff on the Refrigerator Door, and clicking on the bookmark or
hyperlink will take you to all the gory detail. Events will remain on the Fridge
door until the event date passes, and other notices will remain for up to one
month or so after first posting. To get something posted, or if you have other
questions about the PPC Fridge, please send it to The PPC Social Chair (
Email the Social Chair ) at the PPC or
you can check out the
Fridge Door FAQ's Frequently Asked Questions), below. And yes, if the PPC
Virtual Refrigerator were a real fridge, it would be a kegerator. More info on
the PPC itself can be found
here.
And if you have way too much free time on your
hands, feel free to browse previous weekly issues of the PPC's Fridge Door.
Check out our archives here. Previous Picture of the Week features are
included too.
