UPDATED 01/26/2006

Picture(s) of the Week!

As Always You Can Also Find Last Week's Fridge Door Pictures of the Week on the PPC Home Page - Click Here

Year End Reporting Hell at work is finally over so Friday January 20 is "Re-Introduction To The Wild" Day as Chris and Miyuki get the game back on @ Duffy's and Bar Chicago. The longest weekend of 2006 begins. A few more pix that my camera remembers but I don't can be found here.

Weekly Feature(s):

  • NPR Time Kill of the Week: Chinese Character Tattoos: Lost in Translation. [editor's note - this website was frickin' hilarious!)] Robert Siegel talks with Tian Tang, author of a Web site ( http://www.hanzismatter.com/ )  dedicated to the misuse of Chinese characters in Western culture. Tang posts photos of Chinese character tattoos that either contain errors or carry no meaning.

Tang says as a Chinese American, he felt it was his "duty and honor to educate the public about the misusage of Chinese characters."

    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5150077

  • Internet Time Kill of the Week: Chicago Beer Map. This is by no means comprehensive:

    http://beerinator.com/chimap.html

It does list dozens of spots, though, and you can add to it by clicking on "brewery mapping project" and then "contact us".

Fridge Door Bonus Pics!

Here's another bonus pic of the usual suspects @ Saturday night's birthday pub crawl. Good times! A few more pix from that pub crawl can be found here.

Thanks to the over 350 peeps who turned out for the 2005 12 Bars of Christmas. Pictures of this wipeout can be found here.

New! Festa's Pix from TBOX 10 (Finally!!)

Here's a pic @ Slugger's on Amy & Aarthi's birthday pub crawl with some peeps I have no idea who they are but for some reason wanted to get a picture with me (was it the hat?) so I also got a picture with them too on my camera. Little did they know it would become a Fridge Door photo op. A few more pix from that pub crawl can be found here.

Important notice from the social chair

As you may have noticed the weekly emails from chicagofourth@yahoo.com are no longer weekly. In fact, they will be discontinued in their current form entirely as of the end of January 2006 and will be replaced with party update emails via our new Yahoo! Group - fridgedoor_chicago.

In order to continue to receive our emails you must sign up at our new Yahoo! group website at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fridgedoor_chicago

This change is being made to improve timeliness as well as service as now all members can manage their own subscriptions to our list (which leaves more time for us to party!).

The existing Fridge Door website itself (this page!) will remain the as our bulletin board, just the manner in which emails are sent and subscriptions managed will changeover to Yahoo! groups. Hope to continue to see you out on the town!

Party on,

Fuji

Hey Friends,

Due to various miscellaneous and sundry technical issues, the PPC Fridge Door more or less weekly Chicago partyage email is now switching over to its own Yahoo! group - fridgedoor_chicago!

In addition to offering greater flexibility this change allows users to manage their own subscriptions to our mailing list.

Effective the end of January 2006 we will cease sending emails directly out from this address and instead use the new Yahoo! group, so to continue to receive our more or less weekly party updates you will need to sign up at our new Yahoo! group site

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fridgedoor_chicago/

Note also that the current PPC Refrigerator Door webpage on the PPC's website will continue to be the main bulletin board so you can still check that out for the latest goings on.

As always, there's the latest parties, some new time kills and new pictures up on the website this week, just didn't want to clutter this important message with them.

I apologize for any slight inconvenience this change may cause to the crew, but long term I think it's for the best and I appreciate your understanding during this transition. Hope to see you out soon!

Party on,

Fuji

Wednesday, January 25: ExpressDater Musical Chair Dinner @ Piece

Musical Chair Dinner at Piece, a Bucktown Favorite

Wednesday, Jan. 25th at 6:30pm

Come see for yourself what all the hype is about. Yes, the pizza is that good! Forget what you know about your traditional pizzas... This is Piece and it's Chicago's "East Coast" style pizza at it's finest! What started out as a local hot spot turned into a neighborhood gem when MTV's "Real World" started filming in Chicago a few years back. Since then, Piece Pizzeria has gotten many great reviews and has established itself as a Chicago pizza giant. Besides great pizzas, Piece has also won numerous awards & recognition for their beers. Pizza place, micro brewery...awesome combination!

We will enter the scene on Wednesday, January 25th and will hold the next musical chair dinner at Piece.

You'll come in, sit down, enjoy the company, make new friends and enjoy a fantastic night that includes 2 appetizers, a choice of 3 different pizzas, and a signature dessert. As with all musical chair dinners, you will be seated alternately male & female and at the end of each course the men will change seats and you have a new set of dinner guests. All this for only $40.00. Soft drinks are also included.

Visit our website today at www.expressdater.com and join the others already signed up for this fun evening in Bucktown.

See you there!

Anyone is welcome...the more the merrier. Hope to see YOU there! No need to RSVP - just show up. If you want to be removed from this list, reply and put REMOVE in the subject header.

Sunday, February 5: Super Bowl Sunday Kickball @ Jonquil Park

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME KICKBALL!!???

After a two-year hiatus, the craziness is back with "Lunatic Bowl VII" on Super Bowl Sunday once again back in Jonquil Park in Lincoln Park.

This classic Festa tradition has been in the can the last few years as he's been busy starting up his business but has always been a complete blast so we're resurrecting it for '06!

Here's the tradition - on Super Bowl Sunday folks would gather at Jonquil Park around 11am for friendly game of kickball in the snow and to have a few drinks. We use orange traffic cones as the bases (regular white bases don't show well in the snow) and there would be traditional "team meetings" between innings to take hits from a bottle of Mad Dog kept under the second base cone.

A group of 12-15 is ideal and it was a great warmup for all those Super Bowl parties later in the day. As you are playing kickball in the snow, little or no athletic ability is required or makes much of a difference.

For reference, here's Festa's old webpage on it:

http://www.itsalongstory.com/fun_archives/chicago_kickball.htm

In keeping with ritual and tradition the 2006 game will be held at the spiritual home of Festa Super Bowl Sunday Kickball, Jonquil Park at the intersection of Wrightwood, Sheffield & Lincoln. It's also close to public transportation and parking is usually quite ample for Lincoln Park as it's Sunday.

Note this is a Chicago Park District property so please don't show up with a half barrel, a case of beer or other conspicuous alcohol. Bottles in bags or pre-mixed drinks have done us well in the past.

Also I have all the equipement needed (cones and balls) in my garage already thanks to my participation in kickball league in Milwaukee (more pictures below for those with time to kill).

http://www.chicagofourth.com/Homestuff/Pictures/Kickballpix.htm

The only thing folks needed to bring was their favorite "warm you up drink" (like schnapps, hard cider, Mad Dog, etc).

I will try and get Festa himself to make a celebrity appearance. Bring it on!

Post-kickball actual Super Bowl (the other game that day) activities TBD but might throw something together depending upon interest or bolt onto someone else's event. Lots of time to figure that one out tho.

Party on,

--Fuji

Friday, February 10: John Corry's Happy Hour @ Cherry Red

HAPPY HOUR

WHERE: Cherry Red 2833 Sheffield (& George)

WHEN: Friday Feb 10th 7:30 to 10:30 and on…

WHAT DO I GET:  well drinks, wine, pop, miller lite bottles, stoli drinks, pizza and love potion #9 shots.  Also, Ryan See is back to play for us with a DJ afterwards!

HOW MUCH: THE USUAL $ 25.00 with $5 going directly to charity.

Hello everyone,

It’s Valentine’s Day soon!  Any plans?  Maybe the Olive Garden and some flowers from White Hen??  Flippin sweet!   I have a much naughtier idea…  Cherry Red.  It’s cheaper than dinner and flowers, and your special gal will thank you for it!  Last year I was handcuffed to my soul mate for 20 minutes.  Every time I asked her something she was so sweet and said OK OK.  After she found the key I realized she was saying Go AWAY GO AWAY! Never the less, we had our moment and I miss you, you complete me wherever you are.

Last years party at Cherry Red was a blast!  It has a ton of room and the special is pretty good.  Who are you crapping anyway Cupid! Your friends have forced dates and you have a chance to let your arrow flow instead of always “rosining up your bow”…    Also this charity is so much fun that I decided to do it again.  A family with no money and almost no way to pay for their child’s cancer treatments are going to get our anonymous donation!  Get there early and don’t forget to find your famous couple matching sticker so you can find that someone special…  See you there!

John Corry
