Picture(s) of the Week!

As Always You Can Also Find Last Week's Fridge Door Pictures of the Week on the PPC Home Page - Click Here

Here's a picture of the gang from Nora's Eve of the Eve preparty. More pix from the Eve of the Eve itself can be found here.

Weekly Feature(s):

  • NPR Time Kill of the Week: Glass Shape Can Affect Amount of Alcohol Poured. A researcher at Cornell University has found that even when bartenders are told to be very careful, they pour about 30 percent more alcohol into a tumbler-sized glass than a highball-sized glass. The result can mean people have more to drink than they think they're getting.

  • Internet Time Kill of the Week: Do Not Call Registry. JUST A REMINDER, 14 days from today, cell phone numbers  are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS!

These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end  up costing you money in the long run. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 1-888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You can also register your number at www.donotcall.gov.

Fridge Door Bonus Pics!

Here's a pic of PPC old guard royalty Marietta visiting back from London and Mahu visiting back from East Wilmette. At least Tina still lives in the city! A couple more pix from that night can be found here.

Thanks to the over 350 peeps who turned out for the 2005 12 Bars of Christmas. Pictures of this wipeout can be found here.

New! Festa's Pix from TBOX 10 (Finally!!)

Here's a pic of the host with the most, our buddy Tom at his house party on New Year's Eve on Lincoln. Definitely the place to be that night! A few more pix from this blowout and the other two stops on NYE can be found here.

Hey friends,

Hope everyone had a great New Year's and their livers are recovering. The Bears are in the playoffs and it's 50 degrees in January in Chicago. Can't get more auspicious than that! This weekend we kick it back into gear headlined by the 20/30 Club starting us off Friday night with one of their legendary happy hours at the Mars Gallery and then then my friend Keith's crew's Hail to the Capricorns Party at Lincoln Tap Room.

And if it seem's I've been off the radar of late, it's true. I'm in year-end reporting hell right now (working 14-17 hour days seven days a week which is why the only new pix this week are Festa's from December!). Hopefully I'll be able to get out sometime this weekend and be back inthe game next week. As mentioned in the last Fridge Door for 2006 the emails will be driven by weekends when there's good stuff going on rather than every week. All the events I know of will still be posted on the webpage tho so check back often. Without further adieu here's what's on the board this week:

Sunday, February 5: Super Bowl Sunday Kickball @ Jonquil Park

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME KICKBALL!!???

After a two-year hiatus, the craziness is back with "Lunatic Bowl VII" on Super Bowl Sunday once again back in Jonquil Park in Lincoln Park.

This classic Festa tradition has been in the can the last few years as he's been busy starting up his business but has always been a complete blast so we're resurrecting it for '06!

Here's the tradition - on Super Bowl Sunday folks would gather at Jonquil Park around 11am for friendly game of kickball in the snow and to have a few drinks. We use orange traffic cones as the bases (regular white bases don't show well in the snow) and there would be traditional "team meetings" between innings to take hits from a bottle of Mad Dog kept under the second base cone.

A group of 12-15 is ideal and it was a great warmup for all those Super Bowl parties later in the day. As you are playing kickball in the snow, little or no athletic ability is required or makes much of a difference.

For reference, here's Festa's old webpage on it:

http://www.itsalongstory.com/fun_archives/chicago_kickball.htm

In keeping with ritual and tradition the 2006 game will be held at the spiritual home of Festa Super Bowl Sunday Kickball, Jonquil Park at the intersection of Wrightwood, Sheffield & Lincoln. It's also close to public transportation and parking is usually quite ample for Lincoln Park as it's Sunday.

Note this is a Chicago Park District property so please don't show up with a half barrel, a case of beer or other conspicuous alcohol. Bottles in bags or pre-mixed drinks have done us well in the past.

Also I have all the equipement needed (cones and balls) in my garage already thanks to my participation in kickball league in Milwaukee (more pictures below for those with time to kill).

http://www.chicagofourth.com/Homestuff/Pictures/Kickballpix.htm

The only thing folks needed to bring was their favorite "warm you up drink" (like schnapps, hard cider, Mad Dog, etc).

I will try and get Festa himself to make a celebrity appearance. Bring it on!

Post-kickball actual Super Bowl (the other game that day) activities TBD but might throw something together depending upon interest or bolt onto someone else's event. Lots of time to figure that one out tho.

Party on,

--Fuji

Contact Your Alderman to Support Say Adios To Blue Bags and Hello To True Source-Separated Recycling

From my friend and fellow recycling proponent, Shira. [Fuji editorial comment: I don't usually put political stuff up on the board, but this issue hits home for me. I think the Blue Bag program has not worked and I for one think that if it costs a buck a week more for the city to do real recycling I'm all for it. They can use 52 of the thousands of extra property tax dollars they collect from me every year as the assessed valuations of Party Central have skyrocketed with the rest of Lincoln Park!]

This measure was recently supported by a majority of Chicago Alderman to move from Blue Bags to true source-separated recycling (separate collection containers and pickups). Contact your alderman if you support the way to truly get Chicago recycling!

The story on this in the Trib

Below is an ordinance to be voted on tomorrow morning, Wednesday 1/11 to improve Chicago recycling. The ordinance cites numerous depressing statistics on the current state of the Blue Bag program and proposes that recyclables be separated at their source.

- Your ward should be on your voter's registration card, or you can figure it out from the map at http://egov.cityofchicago.org/webportal/COCWebPortal/COC_EDITORIAL/Wards_overview_2.pdf

- Once you know your ward you can find your alderman at http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalProgramAction.do?programId=536879154&channelId=-536879035&topChannelName=Government

Text of the proposed ordinance is below.

Order Requiring the Department of Streets and Sanitation to Implement a City-Wide Residential Source-Separated Recycling Program

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago, under the leadership of Mayor Richard M. Daley, has implemented a number of path breaking environmental initiatives and programs, such as the Brownfields Initiative, energy efficiency programs, the Center for Green Technology, and the Green Building, Green Bungalow and Green Roofs initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago's residential recycling programs stand as a blot on the City's otherwise admirable environmental record; and

WHEREAS, recycling conserves natural resources such as trees, oil, and mined metals; and products made with recycled materials consume less energy to manufacture than those made of raw materials, resulting in fewer fossil fuels being burned and less greenhouse gas created; and

WHEREAS, recycling creates jobs for the community, as industries are established and expanded to accept, process, and remanufacture clean and separately collected recycled materials; and

WHEREAS, the Illinois Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Act requires all Illinois counties and the City of Chicago to implement recycling programs that divert at least 25 percent of municipal waste to recycling; and

WHEREAS, recycling reduces the need for new landfills, which will be soon be in demand in the Chicago Metropolitan Region, as per the latest (2003) report by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the region has only five years of remaining landfill capacity; and

WHEREAS, the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation currently operates a residential recycling program, termed the "blue bag program," which collects and mixes together recyclable materials, yard trimmings, and garbage; and

WHEREAS, the blue bag program has never successfully recovered more than 10 to 12 percent of the waste as usable, resalable commodities, that is, paper, cardboard, metals, glass, and plastic; and.

WHEREAS, the city, instead of separately collecting and hauling yard trimmings, mixes clean yard waste with the garbage, creating a contaminated substance it calls "screened yard waste," which cannot be composted on farmland or used in gardens; and

WHEREAS, the city currently allows 30 percent of the residential waste loads to bypass the city's own sorting facilities and instead be hauled directly to waste transfer stations, where little or none of the recyclable materials are recovered; and.

WHEREAS, the overall recovery rate for the blue bag program - by mixing garbage with recyclables, contaminating yard trimmings, and utilizing transfer stations - is currently only 8 percent, which is the lowest recovery rate since the program began in 1995; and

WHEREAS, the people of Chicago, understanding that the blue bag program does not effectively recover their recycled materials, have been unwilling to embrace the program, resulting in a participation rate of only 13 percent; and

WHEREAS, most major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle, have implemented citywide source-separated recycling and composting programs for their residents, which result in 20 to 50 percent recovery rates and 70 to 90 percent participation rates; and

WHEREAS, after ten years, the recovery and participation rates for the blue bag program are not only unacceptably low, but continue to decline; now, therefore,

BE IT HEREBY ORDERED that the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation implement a citywide source-separated residential recycling program that collects the full range of common household recyclable materials and yard waste separately from residential garbage collection; and

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Streets and Sanitation and other relevant City Departments implement regulations requiring private waste haulers to implement similar source-separated recycling programs; and

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that these programs shall be fully implemented no later than January 1, 2009.

Donate Extra Frequent Flyer Miles To Help Our Troops Come Home: Operation Hero Miles

From my co-worker Bev. If you have some extra frequent flyer miles, or are current or former road warrior like me and have frequent flyer accounts at every major airline and have some miles lying around you'll probably never use at airlines you hardly fly, this is a great use for them rather then forfeiting them over time. More info available at http://www.heromiles.org/

~~

In September 2003, the Pentagon started giving soldiers stationed in Iraq two-week leaves in the largest R & R program since the Vietnam War. Soldiers on R & R or Emergency Leave are flown by the military to Germany or three airports in the United States, Baltimore/Washington, (BWI), Dallas/FortWorth, (DFW), or Atlanta, (ATL ) for free.

The soldiers have been responsible for flights the rest of the way in the U.S. to their destinations, until Congress provided funding for this purpose on November 3, 2003. However, this funding is not yet available and may not be sufficient for all the troops or troops on "Emergency Leave".

More than 470 soldiers a day are arriving in the U.S.

Many soldiers on R&R leave must purchase high-priced last minute airfares to connect to their hometowns once their military flights land at the airports in Baltimore, Dallas or Atlanta. Soldiers on "Emergency Leave" must still pay the full cost of their domestic travel when they are rushed home for the family death, birth, illness or other emergency. The military does not pay the cost of their travel in the United States, so your frequent flyer miles are a huge help.

Americans have donated their unused frequent flyer miles to the Department of Defense to help troops travel home and spend quality time with their loved ones, without worrying about how much it will cost.

The lowdown on the PPC Fridge Door...

Okay folks, we get lots of requests to post various things such as notice of upcoming parties and other events, as well as people who are looking to buy/sell/rent stuff like condos, cars, etc. Rather than put them all on a large spam email, we've decided to conserve electrons for use in more important stuff (saving up for the bar tab) and keep all this good stuff on this page, kind of like how you post notices and other stuff on your fridge door at home.

The top portion contains a detailed index of all the stuff on the Refrigerator Door, and clicking on the bookmark or hyperlink will take you to all the gory detail. Events will remain on the Fridge door until the event date passes, and other notices will remain for up to one month or so after first posting. To get something posted, or if you have other questions about the PPC Fridge, please send it to The PPC Social Chair ( Email the Social Chair ) at the PPC or you can check out the Fridge Door FAQ's Frequently Asked Questions), below. And yes, if the PPC Virtual Refrigerator were a real fridge, it would be a kegerator. More info on the PPC itself can be found here.

And if you have way too much free time on your hands, feel free to browse previous weekly issues of the PPC's Fridge Door. Check out our archives here. Previous Picture of the Week features are included too.
