Thursday, June 9 - Sunday June 12: 22nd Annual Chicago Blues Festival in Grant Park

The world’s largest free admission Blues festival turns twenty-two this year, with plans to celebrate centennials, birthdays, highlight Chicago’s most talented Blues performers and more. The 22nd Annual Chicago Blues Festival will take place in Grant Park, June 9-12, 2005.

This year, the Chicago Blues Festival will celebrate the centennials of Jimmy Walker, Meade Lux Lewis, and Big Maceo, whose song “Chicago Breakdown” names this year’s theme. This year also pays tribute to the British Blues invasion, and Savoy Brown’s 40th Anniversary.

The schedule is complete and this year showcases the very best in Blues music for all tastes! The festival celebrates the centennials of the triad of piano greats by presenting the blues and boogie playing of Erwin Helfer, Roosevelt Purifoy, Barrelhouse Chuck, Henry Grey, Detroit Jr., Bob Seeley, Lucky Peterson, and British piano legend Bob Hall. Mr. Hall will also play with Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. “Chicago Breakdown” author Mike Rowe, will be on a panel onsite at the Chicago Blues Festival, discussing the British Perspective.

Helping celebrate their 90th birthdays, David “HoneyBoy” Edwards will open the festival Thursday, June 9 on the Petrillo Bandshell and Robert Jr. Lockwood will play at the Gibson Guitar Crossroads on June 10. A special set commemorating the 20 years since Eddie Taylor’s passing will feature many of his children and musical disciples on the U.S. Cellular Front Porch Saturday afternoon.

There are many first time performers like John Mayall and his BluesBreakers, Eddie Kirkland, George Stancell, Fernest Arceneaux, Sharrie Williams, and Calvin Cooke gracing the Chicago Blues Festival stages while showcasing many local legends in special harmonica sets and tributes to Jimmy Walker; but the festival is proud to welcome back Chicago’s own Mavis Staples, Koko Taylor, and 5 time Grammy Award Winner Buddy Guy.

The Chicago Blues Festival is open from 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. daily (music begins at noon), and promises a good time for everyone. The four-day festival offers the best in national, international and local Blues entertainment on six stages with more than 70 performers, preceded by a month of Blues activities (Blues season) throughout Chicago. The Chicago Blues Festival brings people of all ages, from all over the world to enjoy the blues. More than half a million people attend this popular festival!

Andersonville Midsommarfest, now in its 40th year, is one of the region's most eagerly anticipated and well established summer festivals. Each year approximately 35,000 people gather on Clark Street to enjoy great international food, stellar family activities, lively entertainment on four stages and over 100 quality artisans showcasing their wares.

Midsommarfest is one of Chicago’s most unique street fairs. Born out of Andersonville's Swedish heritage, Midsommarfest retains its quaint, international flavor. Old-world Swedish traditions, including a festive dance around the Maypole, are incorporated into an unrivaled array of entertainment for families and adults. A special family area includes face painting, games and a family stage with entertainment such as the Jesse White Tumblers, Nordic Folk dancers, the Barefoot Hawaiian Dancers, a pet parade and much more. The other two stages are filled all day with spirited music, including nationally-renowned acts, guaranteed to get the crowd dancing.

The quaint little Swedish "village" of Andersonville features some of Chicago's most intriguing shops and a wonderful array of international eateries. The 40th Annual Midsommarfest will take place in the heart of Andersonville on Saturday and Sunday, June 11th & 12th from 11:00 AM until 10:00PM.

Seeking World’s Most Committed Volunteers—and Lots of Them

Join the 1,600 people who make the Block Party a whopping success every year.

Hosting 25,000 people in the Old St. Pat’s neighborhood for two nights is no small task. For only $20 (a $15 discount off a one-night ticket), volunteers get to work one night and attend the opposite night. It’s easy to volunteer.

Here’s five ways to volunteer:

· Sign up online at www.worldslargestblockparty.com.

· Sign up at After Five on June 12.

· Request a sign-up application at blockpartyvolunteers@oldstpats.org and mail the form with your check.

· Request an application form by calling the Volunteer Hotline at 312.831.9369 and mail in the form with your check.

Volunteers are needed for many types of jobs. Some examples are bartending, food ticket sales and food vending, decorations, phone banks and office work, event ticket and raffle ticket sales, monitoring gates, and handling supplies. Trained medical personnel are also needed for the first aid stations.

Proceeds support the church campus that houses the many outreach missions of Old St. Pat’s. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, make friends, have fun…and serve a worthy cause.

Here’s What Past Volunteers Have to Say

An informal poll of repeat Block Party volunteers shows myriad reasons why people volunteer and some of the benefits they feel they receive. Here’s a sampling of the poll results.

Question: What is the Number 1 benefit you get from your volunteer experience?

· Sense of excitement from being a part of the best party in town.

· Sense of being part of a long tradition of volunteers that have built the Block Party, thus making history.

· For years I wondered how people got those cool t-shirts that I would see on the beach and at street festivals…last year I finally got one of my own.

· You really appreciate the depth of the volunteer experience when you learn about the community outreach programs at Old St. Pat’s and how proceeds from the Block Party benefit them.

· When you volunteer, you seem to have a panoramic view of the party. It is difficult to put into words, but you have a sense of wonder of the whole Block Party experience.

· Last year, I met my boyfriend when we were both volunteering at the Block Party—this year I need to go to keep my eye on him!

· I am not sure about what they say about the extraordinary number of people who meet their future spouse at the Block Party. As a serial matchmaker, I feel that it is my social responsibility to the community….well, you know.” (Editor’s note: Records show that 65 couples have met their future spouse at the Block Party.)

· After being abandoned by all of my buddies who married and moved to the suburbs, I worked two Block parties and met people who have replaced them quite nicely.

· Since it is on our family calendar from the first of July, it would be sacrilegious to skip it!

· While volunteering on clean-up, I got to see the craziest things that people leave behind.

· The people-watching is fantastic.

· I love crowds.

· I can tell my parents that I am volunteering at the church on SATURDAY night.

· Working with such great people on a wonderful “little” church fundraiser.

· I once told a young man that if he wanted to meet girls, he should sell raffle tickets. When your job is to sell raffle tickets, you have every reason to strike up conversations with people, including groups of the opposite sex that you might find attractive!

· From a Pot O’ Gold committee member: The greatest thing about being a volunteer is knowing that I had a hand in making someone’s day by selling the winning Pot O’ Gold ticket.

And one volunteer put it this way, “Old St. Pat’s Volunteers—God-a love em!
