Message from the Social Chair:

Friends,

This year marks a year of SIGNIFICANT TRANSITION the PPC's events lineup. It has been five years since I've assumed the unofficial helm of the PPC and during this time, together we've been able to:

  • The 4th of July BBQ Scavenger Hunt Pub Crawl has been successfully transitioned from our old Howe St. Party Palace to Party Central on Fullerton after the last of us (J-Dog) moved out of Howe.
  • We've successfully added pub crawl lanes in Wrigleyville and the Southport Corridor to our stable of pub crawl routes.
  • The 12 Bars of Christmas has grown from 67 people to over 300 every year. We've also negotiated a long term agreement with Festa so we don't conflict with his 1200-person TBOX event anymore.
  • We've had our largest party ever at Adam, Brett, & Larry's 4000 sqft apartment: the 355-person "Prom of the Living Dead" Halloween Party in 2001!
  • We've added numerous "flanker" events such as Steve's St. Valentine's Day Massacre parties, Champagne & Chocolat, our September 11 Disaster Relief Party, and many, many more.
  • The PPC website has evolved from being a static page for our once-a-year 4th of July party to an ongoing events resource in the form of the PPC Fridge Door, which now goes out to over 350 party people every week.

All of this and we've either run events at breakeven or raised a few bucks here and there for good causes. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who hard work has helped us make all these great parties possible. You guys are the greatest! But as we've learned since the day we had go from kindergarten to first grade, we have to change with the times.

The biggest change is the last of the Old Guard, the Chairman Emeritus, is expecting his second kid and will therefore be finally pried out of the City, kicking and screaming, to a life in Wilmette this Fall. Because of this and other changes, the PPC events lineup is being adjusted to more closely align with the times. Fact of the matter is, we're not all 22 anymore and right out of school, so doing these things back-to-back is killing us!

Rest assured, although the mix will change somewhat, the PPC will soldier on, providing fun events for our friends. That is my commitment to you, my friends. Here's a top-level view of the changes we envision this year:

  • We've successfully added the new PPC Spring Pub Crawl called Spring Break.
  • We've combined with the 20/30 Club of Chicago to more than double the size of the boat cruise event. In 2005 this and the fireworks will be our 4th of July celebration.
  • Once again there will be no Cubs game because they're playing the Sox inter-league so tickets are impossible to get (damn those brokers!).
  • We say goodbye to the storied tradition of the 4th of July BBQ Picnic Scavenger Hunt Pub Crawl after the 2004 Finale.
  • We will add in the Fall our first ever Drinkin' on Lincoln Pub Crawl.
  • The 12 Bars of Christmas will remain the same classic event. Save Saturday, December 4th 2004!

Get Ready to Rock! It's Summer in Chicago and time for the final iteration of the PPC's flagship multiparty 4th of July celebration!

Message from the Chairman Emeritus:

Friends - With some sadness and after a lot of sorrow I am announcing that this will be the last July 4th party after consulting with Fuji. What started out in 1992 as a bunch of guys from Boston in the backyard of the "Budweiser building in left field at Wrigley field, to Mark's Howe St. house and the addition of the boat, shirts, leis, beads, a web site, friends and Mark's father from out of town, and then on to Fuji's since 1999, it has been a great time, but just like all the other 'comforts' coming from the 1990's (Friends TV show, Thursday nights at Four Farthings, Beach volleyball every Sunday rain/shine @ 2:30 pm, blading on Weds, hooking up with old college boyfriends and girlfriends and the walk of shame, birthday pub crawls on Lincoln Avenue, first dates at the Zoo (It's free!!) the Afrodysiacs band, Frank's Halloween Party, closing a street fest on a Sunday night at 10 pm, and dancing on top the bar while drinking the fishbowl with 4 straws at Bamboo Bernie's) they all have to end.

The party will be held on Sunday July 4th, Fuji has agreed to host again (thanks dude - since we have average over 100+ people the last couple of years) and of course is the final pub crawl with refs and the trophies. The boat will happen June 26 but is now combined with the 20/30 club. All the details can be found at www.chicagofourth.com. Fuji and I are hoping that some of the old 'guard' will be wiling to help out on the July 4th party logistics. Nevertheless we are looking fwd to seeing you at the 'main' event the party and crawl.

Please fwd this to all our friends and yours since this is the initial starting point of communication. I hope that all of you on the list can show up even if some of the zaniness may seem immature but a lots of fun and worth years of laughs when you get older, get married, and have kids. It would be great to see some of the original party planners and past attendees (Mark's Dad and Uncle, Geno, Stiz, Big Bob, Frank, Guy, Olaf - the food poisoning candidate, Heather, Lori, and I apologize for any others that I am leaving off the list) so please fwd the info to them.

Lastly, Fuji and I are going to try to set up a "Marietta fund" to use some of the proceeds to help with M's cost to fly over from London for the event. Watch the web site for the details and you can always contact Jeff or I.

Mahu is leading this one. Same deal as the Go-Go's concert we hit at the Taste a few years back. Show is free, Petrillo Musica Shell in Grant Park. Starts at 7pm but we'll be there early to stake out a good space. Bring whatever you like to eat and drink. Post concert bar outing also likely, location TBD.

Saturday, July 3: Evening
: Fireworks in Grant Park

Come join us in Grant Park for the best fireworks show in the Midwest, synchronized to the CSO in the Petrillo Music Shell! The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the premier orchestras in the WORLD.  Some of us who have the day off will arrive (very) early and reserve a choice location in the heart of the park.

Like our Sunday volleyball outings, look for the big yellow smiley face flag. We'll be across from the Petrillo Band Shell which is at the intersection of Jackson & Columbus.  BYOB - Please note, alcoholic beverages are technically prohibited in Chicago Park District facilities so use of good judgment (be discreet) is encouraged. There is no cost to attend this event. Just show up and bring whatever you want to eat & drink with you.

Sunday, July 4: Afternoon/Evening THE MAIN EVENT - BBQ Picnic & Scavenger Hunt & Pub Crawl

Getting back to our roots we'll be doing a Lincoln Park route, with eight bars involved, LOTS OF BEVERAGES, our signature Mardi Gras Beads, and  trophies for the Winning teams. This will be an organized event and have all sorts of goodies involved. You don’t want to miss this event (TRUST US)!
